Join award winning portrait artist, Manuela Pilz, who is visiting us from Tasmania for this weekend workshop.

In this 2-day course, you will be introduced to some basic colour theory and how to use a small set of colour pencils to create all the colours of the world.

In this class we will examine how to layer, blend, burnish, scumble, tint and create optical mixing when using colour pencils. Colour pencils can be used for very refined photorealism but also for sketching and freer drawing. We will do several exercises showing how colours work together, and we will look at how colour is used by the impressionist artists such as Monet or Van Gogh to create space, form and vibrancy. After this, we will do a series of small colour pencil drawings of flora and fauna to put our understanding of colour into practice.

Step by step instructions will be given to help with using pencils effectively and there will be regular demonstrations to help. In this class good quality reference images will be supplied.

Level

This class is recommended for those who have not only drawn before but also for those who are new to drawing.

Materials

4 sheets of A4 cartridge or bristol paper.

1 set of 24 or 36 Prismacolor pencils.

Notepad to take notes for class.

Prismacolor sharpener.

Blending sticks.

Tombow eraser or electric eraser.

Faber Castell Kneadable eraser.

Hard eraser.

Good artist masking tape.

Large clean, soft brush to brush away crumbs

Small jar for solvents.
