Drawing Heads Close Up and Personal with Manuela Pilz (TAS)
July 11, 2025 - July 13, 2025
9:30 am - 4:00 pm
Join portrait and life drawing teacher, Manuela Pilz (TAS) in this 3-day weekend workshop and be introduced to the drawing tools to help create a large portrait in charcoal.
In this class we will examine how to draw features of the face and the form of the head with emphasis on using comparative measurement, dealing with proportions and how to depict features of the face with charcoal using the reductive method. After several requests for how to deal with drawing hair, Manuela has introduced a new section to this workshop which will dedicate time to teaching how to draw hair effectively and expressively. We will create another piece focusing on how to show the form, structure, and texture of hair.
Step-by-step instructions will be given to help with working with charcoal and there will be regular demonstrations to watch and learn from. There are several different types of charcoal we can work with in this workshop.
Good quality reference images will be supplied by your tutor and time will be given to explaining the process of choosing a good reference image for a monochrome drawing to help you choose reference images in the future.

This class is recommended for those who have not only drawn portraits before but also for those who are beginners to drawing the portrait.
