This Two-Day Weekend Workshop with Penelope Gilbert-Ng will cover both Landscape and Seascape using pastel.

Day 1: Painting a Seascape on Art Spectrum Terracotta Colourfix Paper.

Day 2: A Landscape on White Clairefontaine Pastelmat Paper with a Watercolour Underpainting, then Completed with Pastel.

Working on different substrates is a great way to explore different effects.

Over the course of the weekend Penelope will demonstrate various applications and help each student individually in a relaxed and friendly environment.

MATERIALS LIST

Paper: 1x Full Sheet of Art Spectrum Colourfix Terracotta and 1x A3 Clairefontaine Pastel White

Pastels: Bring along what Soft Pastels you have. Landscape sets are a good starting point. Art Spectrum have excellent sets in squares and lights, Terry Ludwig and Unison have great landscape sets. Penelope suggests 3 tones of each colour light medium and dark variations, Schmincke Quinacridone Violet 048D is Penelope’s favourite dark pastel. A selection of Pastel Pencils if you wish to use

Reference Material: Landscape and Seascape you have taken a photo of in early morning or late afternoon creating long shadows. No photos from books or magazines. No flash photography as this flattens form. Large enough reference. Your image on an iPad is a good idea so you can zoom in for any detail. It also shows colour more accurately as light comes from behind into the photo. Printed images are determined by a printer’s ink. Or you can use your tutors reference images.

Watercolour: Preferably in tubes – Red, Yellow, and Blue, cool and warm of each (double primaries).

Brushes:  Old large not your special brushes, pointed watercolour brush (paper will chew the bristles as abrasive)

Art Spectrum Colour Shaper Taper Tip for blending

Spray Bottle for Fine Spray

Water Container

Rag/Paper Towel

4x Bull Dog Clips

Masking Tape: Beige half inch (NO coloured tape as in blue or green)

Hand Towel

Camera/iPad

Optional: Hand protection such as gloves or barrier cream.
