Jenny Mack (VIC) will demonstrate both gradient and bokeh backgrounds with soft pastel sticks, which you will then practice and decide on which to use for your own pet portrait. Included will be information on choosing great reference photos, understanding colour and tonal value, and building up your base and layers – a vital part of creating realistic fur. As there are different coat textures, Jenny will demonstrate how to approach the most common ones. Of course, you will also be spending time on those all-important shining eyes, wet noses, gorgeous ears and whiskers. You will be pulling all this together to create your very own individual pet portrait!

MATERIALS REQUIRED

1x Clear photo of your pet (cat/dog). Bring either a high quality, printed copy or your ipad/laptop with the image on it. Please make sure your device is fully charged!

1x A3 Sheet Dark grey Clairefontaine Pastelmat

1x A4 Sheet Dark grey Clairefontaine Pastelmat (piece for practice).

The A3 size sheet should have your selected pet’s image transferred onto it PRIOR to attending the class. This can be done using White Saral Wax Free Transfer Paper.

A selection of soft pastel sticks for the background and base layers of pet portrait. Background colours should include either greens or blue tones, and include at least a dark, medium and light. Base layer colours depend on the colour of your pet and can be advised by one of friendly staff at Shore Studio Art Supplies.

A selection of professional pastel pencils. The colours you require will vary depending on the colour of your pet. Please include a Generals White Charcoal pencil and a Cretacolor Black Chalk pencil.

Sofft Tools, eye shadow applicators or cotton buds for blending.

A microfibre cleaning cloth

Craft knife (sharp) and sandpaper for sharpening pastel pencils.

1x Roll clear, cheap packing tape to create clean edges on your portrait. If you already have similar, please bring that.

1x Sheet of glassine to prevent smudging as you work, and to protect your beautiful portrait when you finish!
