Watercolour Landscapes with James McKay

Two-Day Watercolour Workshop with James McKay with a focus on landscapes and seascapes.
We will touch on design, composition and perspective to create the framework of a painting that reads well.
We will closely look at tone and using subtle shifts in tone, avoiding too much contrast to create a painting that is pleasing to the eye.
Similarly with colour we will work on using colour to create depth and light, also looking at some unconventional ways to mix colour to create continuity in the painting.
We will do some exercises and a number of complete paintings. The emphasis will be on practicing and understanding the techniques rather than creating good paintings to take home.
MATERIALS LIST
- 2x Full Sheets of Arches or Saunders & Waterford 300gsm rough or cold pressed watercolour paper (to be cut into smaller pieces) Pads are fine too (A2, A3, A4)
- Sketch book
- Mop brush with a good point (about as thick as your thumb) Size 20+
- Small fine pointed synthetic brushes (size 15, 10 and one smaller)
- Watercolour palette (suggested colours: Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Turquoise Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red) – Best in tubes, rather than pans.
- 4B and 2B Graphite Pencil
- Kneadable Eraser
- Old hand towel and tissues
- Small spray bottle and water container
- Board to work on with something to prop it up at an angle
